Earthquake Summary for September 20, 2001

GLOBAL

There were two earthquakes of Mb>=5 registered by NEIS today. These
occurred in the New Britain region (Mb 5.0) and in the subduction
zone south of Bali, Indonesia (Mb 5.6, 4.8). Other events of Mb>=4.5
occurred off the Coast of No. California (Mb 4.5) and in the South
Atlantic Ocean (Mb 4.6).

U.S./CANADA

The largest earthquake (MB 4.5) in the Canada/U.S. region today occurred
of the Coast of Northern California about 70 km west of Petrolia, CA.
This is the largest event in this region since April, 2001 when a
Ml 4.8 occurred near the epicenter of today's earthquake. A Ml 2.8
was also recorded near the Coso Junction swarm area. No accompanying
quakes were noted, so this does not appear to be the start of an new
swarm.
Other earthquakes of Ml>=2 occurring the California/Nevada region
today were a Ml 2.3 south of Los Angeles and a Ml 2.2 in the Pacifica
(San Francisco) region and near Parkfield (Ml 2.2). The largest event
in the southern California region was a Ml 2.5 near Calexico. An unusual
Ml 1.5 was also registered near Martinez, CA.
The swarm of micro-earthquakes continued under Mt. St. Helens today.
Other micro-earthquakes were noted near Mt. Hood and Mt. Rainier, WA.
In the eastern U.S. and Canada a small event (Ml 1.5) occurred near
Ottawa, Ontario.
GEOMAGNETIC/SOLAR FIELDS

The geomagnetic field remained quiet today. There were no flares
of M- or X- class observed on the sun.

TROPICAL STORMS

No tropical storms were affecting the North American region today.
