QUIET CONDITIONS GENERALLY PREVAILED TODAY GLOBAL Global seismicity was at fairly low levels today. No earthquakes of Mb>=5 were reported by NEIS, however MEDNET did show an event of MB 5 in the region of Bali early on the 20th of September. The only events listed by NEIS of Mb>=4 today were a Mb 4.4 in the Rat Islands, Aleutians and a Mb 4.7 in Guatemala. MEDNET also identified a minor event of Mb 4.3 in Buru, Indonesia. U.S./CANADA Seismicity in the United States and Canada was also at fairly quiet conditions today (September 19). As usual, the strongest events in the region occurred in the Alaska area with the Mb 4.4 in the Rat Islands and with a Ml 3.7 in the border area between Alaska and the Yukon Territory. A Mb 3.6 was also recorded in Hawaii today. In California/Nevada area there were no events of Ml>=2.5 today, continuing a nearly two-week quiet period for this region. The largest events occurred at Mammoth Lakes and the Geysers both of which recorded an event of Ml 2.4. Other earthquakes of Ml>=2 occurred at Markleeville, Big Bear and San Simeon. No events of Ml>=2 were reported from the east or Central U.S. or Canada today. In the Pacific northwest, the swarm south of Vancouver Island continued, but with reduced intensity. No events of Ml>=4 occurred in that area today. A swarm which began several days ago is continuing in the Mt. St. Helens, WA area. So far, only small microquakes have occurred, but magma is moving, and we may see a larger event in the next several days in this area. GEOMAGNETIC/SOLAR FIELDS The geomagnetic field was at quiet conditions today. No solar flares of M- or X- class were observed. Earthquakes of Mb 4.6, 4.7 and 5.0 have occurred in the area of this tropical depression in the past 24 hours in the region of Guatemala and El Salvador.
