Hi Petra. I did a little search of my own and it appears that this area is no stranger to earthquakes. For instance the month of Oct. 1996 had 10 earthquakes. This started off with a 6.7Me on10/06/1996. It would be safe to say the rest were aftershocks although I haven’t checked to insure that is indeed what they are.

The search yielded only quakes above 3.0Ml. There were 3 years starting with 1973 that had no quakes about 3.0Ml. This was 1975, 1979 and 1980. There doesn’t seem to be any pattern, but 28 years is really not long enough to see a pattern.

It does seem however that Sept. 2001 may have the most quakes with out a major quake to start the increase in activity. There have been 13 quakes above 3.0Ml since this activity started on 09/07/2001. These are all located inside a 25-mile radius of the largest quake to date, which is located at 48.96N/128.32W.

On record from the NEIC there has been a 6.6Ml in 1926, 6.5Ml in 1939 and a 6.7Ms in 1976. The one in 1976 does indicate there may have been some foreshocks associated with this quake. If they are indeed foreshocks they don’t match the level were seeing now.

To say that what were seeing now could be foreshocks to a much larger quake might not be correct. To say that we are seeing some movement along a fault would be a better way to describe what were seeing which in turn could lead to a larger quake. Take Care…Don in creepy town
