Yep, that was the original section of the Red Line. They also had problems with methane gas from old oil fields. The portion that crosses the Santa Monica/Hollywood fault is an extension they added to the portion of the project you mentioned. The extension now ends in North Hollywood in the San Fernando Valley. It seems they cleaned up their act for the extension as there were very few problems with constructing the extension, but of course, a big chunk of it was under the hollywood hills rather than under city streets.
