A Ml 5.2 earthquake occurred in the Mexican state of Oaxaca this evening. This is the largest earthquake in Oaxaca since a Ml 5.9 on July 21, 2000 and the second largest since Sept 30, 1999 when a Mw 7.5 occurred. SSN (University of Mexico) is giving the following parameters for this and a Ml 4.5 aftershock: 04SEP2001 04:22:30 15.8N 98.5W ML=4.5 SSN COSTA DE OAXACA, MX 04SEP2001 03:26:28 16.1N 98.4W ML=5.2 SSN COSTA GUERRERO-OAXACA, MX
This event was expected as a far-field aftershock from the Pacific Antarctic Ridge earthquake (Post 9219 below): "Areas where an event of Mb>=5.5 is most likely in the next 10 days: (Expected maximum magnitudes increase by 1.0 units) .... Mexico/Oaxaca"
