Elaine, Small quakes do not appear to have enough "oomph" to trigger far-field aftershocks. Significant ground motion (as registered on seismograms) is needed to begin the process. This generally only occurs when earthquakes reach Mw 6.5 or greater. Larger earthquakes are generally only triggered when earthquakes of Mw 7 or greater are the initiators.
