Browning's non-quake

Several years ago I was on a bicycle trip and met a couple of elderly people.
We got to talking and the subject of earthquakes came up. It turned out that
they had gone to New Madrid on the day the Browning earthquake was supposed
to occur and done some fishing. About mid-day the pier they were on started
shaking and they felt - surely this must be the predicted earthquake. But
no such luck. A couple of swimmers were merely putting a scare into them.
But they are now sure they know what an earthquake feels like thanks to
the Browning predictions. Sadly Browning died several years later without
seeing the anticipated earthquake.
