Dear In Oregon

Your employer seismically bracing your building should be seen as a blessing and not something to worry about.

It is no doubt that there will be a large Cascadia Zone subduction quake, its matter of 'when'.

Your building codes are not as strict as what we have in Southern Cal - A quake like we had last weekend would devastate most Urban areas - even So Cal, but without the Building codes, it would look more like the Turkey Quake than the Taiwan quake.

There was surprisingly little damage from Saturday's quake - even though it was in a remote location, the overpasses that we inspected that were within a few miles of the epicenter had surprisingly little damage - some ceiling tiles fell in a store in 29 Palms - overall, not much damage. I think its even a stretch to include that 1 woman that died in her sleep as a result of the quake.

Its a fact of life here that we tie down computer monitors, televisions - brace water heaters - lock down as much as possible large items like bookcases and anything else that might go flying in a quake (or everyone should!) - There's even some neat stuff called Quake Hold that is a putty you can put under your items to secure them to their display cases (decorative items). I even have all pictures and things on the walls attached with quake proof picture hangers.

You can't do too much to be safe - there are lots of sites on the internet that provide information related to quake safety.

Take a look at this page from SCEC:
