Hi Pat and All, What i need to do is go sit down with the housing manager and lay it out. Make her understand that having a "court captain and a backup captain" doesn't mean we will go running to turn off utilities in a minor quake or a problem confined to just one court. For an emergency response time is quick here. However, after teaching disaster prep for almost 9 yrs I know what is going to happen in a major disaster and the maintenance and emergency people are way over taxed. I believe people are just to darn busy to care. I can only hack my way thru so many boiler room doors to turn off utilities. And what if I'm injured? Then who will do it? People just don't care or believe that it can happen. That is until the disaster actually happens. I was amazed (and apalled) that three people I talked to this morning either didn't know what the smell was yesterday (DUH!) or said "I had to go to work and didn't have time to deal with it!" Do you have time to deal with loosing your home & it's entire contents if it blows up? was my response. I don't understand this attitude and due to the nature of this housing area of people coming from all over the country they don't have a clue what can happen in a major disaster. I think it's time for me to get on the stick and enlighten the neighborhood. Get a group together to enlighten housing and start training DART teams whether housing likes it or not. I think a few scare tactics are in order here. Sad to say but it's usually what works. Feeling totally normal today and full of vinegar!Hoping our luck holds out and praying for those in recent EQ ravaged areas. Lucinda
