A large earthquake (MW 6.4) occurred in the Hokkaido
Islands region of Japan today. This area is generally considered
fairly active however, this is the largest event within 100 km
of this epicenter since a Mw 7.0 on Jan 6, 1995 (6.5 years).
It is also the second largest events in this area since Oct. 10, 1974
(more than 25 years), so it must be considered a significant
regional earthquake. Eleven earthquakes of Mw>=6.0 have occurred
in this 100 km radius area since 1975.
