Statistics sometimes help

To put things in perspective, sometimes statistics help.During the period from
1-1-2001 through 7-25-2001 (206 days) there were 36 events of Ml>=2.4 in the
region 38.5-39.6N, 122-123.3W for a rate of 1 event per 5.7 days (0.175 events/day). During the
period 7-26-2001 through 7-29-2001 (4 days) there have been 5 such events for
a rate of 1.25 events per day. This is about 7.1 times the background rate, so
we can be certain this region is currently showing anomalous activity as Petra
and Don claim.
