25th ANNIVERSARY OF THE TANGSHAN, CHINA EARTHQUAKE Twenty-five years ago, on July 27, 1976 (July 28, Local time), a great earthquake hit northeastern China. While the total number of deaths caused by this earthquake is in dispute, it is likely that more than 600,000 were killed and buried in mass graves. Approximately 800,000 - 1,000,000 people were injured and damage was extensive. Damage extended as far as Beijing. This is commonly considered the greatest death toll from an earthquake in the past four centuries and the second greatest in recorded history. MT. PINATUBO DANGER The crater left by the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo beginning on June 15, 1991 has filled with water. The walls are quite unstable. There is considerable danger that a breach in the crater walls will create a massive surge threatening to destroy 3 villages near the Volcano. Experts believe this could happen within a month. Evacuations have been urged.
