Large Aftershock Hits Peru July 7th 2001 |
Hi All, Another sad day has emerged in Peru with the following aftershock: 2001/07/07 09:38:43 17.38S 71.78W 33.0 7.2 A NEAR COAST OF PERU The Alaskan Tsunami Center at first recorded this earthquake as a 6.8 and had not issued a tsunami warning for the West Coast. Though they said localized tsunami's might occur near Peru. They said they would issue a tsunami warning for Hawaii and points East. It is difficult to imagine such a large aftershock in that we only rarely have major quakes as an initial shock. I can well imagine for those already greatly upset by the initial quake at 8.1 and so many other aftershocks, today's 7.2 event must have brought about considerably more damage including taking down any buildings that may have been damaged before, but not leveled. Its only a matter of time now until possible far field aftershock triggering may begin. I hope that the effects will be on the minimal side.
