Update on Solar Eclipse and South Atlantic earthquake

Here are some details on the earthquake in the Southern Mid-Atlantic
Ridge and it's association with the total solar eclipse at the same time.

NEIS now reports the earthquake parameters as:

2001/06/21 11:02:03 17.23S 14.14W 10.0 5.2 A SOUTHERN MID-ATLANTIC RIDGE

Source: http://wwwneic.cr.usgs.gov/neis/bulletin/bulletin.html

Nasa gives the path of totality as follows:

UT NORTHERN LIMIT SOUTHERN LIMIT CENTER LINE PATH CENTRAL
TIME LATITUDE LONGITDE LATITUD LONGITUD LATITUD LONGITUD WDTH DURATION
KM
11:05 18S32.2' 17W42.6' 20S14.1' 017W05.5' 19S22.9' 017W38.6' 169 03m49.1s

Table derived from Table 3 Path of the Umbral Shadow at:
http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/TSE2001/T01tab03.html

Interpolating shows that the center of totality passed within about
40 km of the given epicenter at about 11:12 UT, less than 10 minutes
separate the totality of the eclipse at the epicenter and the
timing of the earthquake. The epicenter was within the total eclipse
path as it was within 40 km of the path center and the path width
was about 175 km at that point. The Central duration lasted 4 minutes,
so the difference between earthquake occurrence time and the
total eclipse is even less than it appears.
Quite an interesting coincidence.
