That's only partly true.

When I started with the government I had a high security job with no public contact.

Once I switched to seismology I had ample contact with the public, particularly while I was in the real-time detection group.

Later on with the USGS I was given my own project, allowed to create the Prediction Monitoring and Evaluation Program and largely did whatever I wished without supervision.

Another part of my job was also classified and had no public contact involved.
