Building safety is critically important to earthquake survival. Everyone recognizes that and agrees. But in many parts of the world the building codes will not be adequate for dealing with earthquakes for decades if ever. After those devastating earthquakes in Turkey in 1999 there were great resolutions made for how things were going to change. But then things just went back to normal with poor building construction. Effective earthquake forecasting programs have to be developed if lives are going to be saved. There is just no getting around that. And remember, I myself am one of the scientists.
