Another Comment The one area of science etc. that I have insisted, again and again, in communications with U.S. Policy Makers that needs to have as much support given to it as possible is the development of new, environmentally safe, affordable sources of energy. The Democrats appear to be in complete agreement as are the Republicans if you leave the “environmentally safe” part out of the statement. Perhaps 30% of the last “State of the Union Address” was devoted to this. And it got significant attention during the Democratic National Convention. I forget what the Republicans said during their convention. Well guess what? The Energy Department is reportedly getting a budget increase for 2013. And combined with the budget cut that they did not get, that makes the increase especially impressive. Isn’t it the most amazing coincidence that the one government agency that I have really strongly supported for many years is getting such a nice budget increase while the USGS is getting a budget cut? And, I actually like the USGS. I think that they are doing important work even though I don’t think they are doing as much as they should be doing. And I don’t like to see them get a budget cut. But, those are the realities of politics. You do what you are asked to do by the White House and Congress or face the consequences. These are personal opinions.
