It's hard to judge the Sumatra quakes as independent. The series in the vicinity starting with the 2004 M9 are doubtless linked. You could call the later ones aftershocks, or else triggered, or else accelerated.

The independent (or not, depending on your interpretation) are Sumatra 2004, Chile 2010, and Japan 2011. Otherwise, seismicity is not so anomalous.

So today's earthquakes does not factor into whether there is a global storm of events.
