No Penny, your memory is not faulty on this one. I was in the bay area when that quake happened. It was like a 5.6 magnitude in June of 1988. There were NO aftershocks to it and I remember the local media discussing that facet of the quake at length at the time. A little over a year later that same stretch of fault was what caused the 1989 Loma Prieta quake. I remember reading or hearing somewhere (I can't source it, who knows if its true) that at least in CA the theory goes that for a 5+ quake on a fault system like the San Andreas w/ no aftershocks is indeed a sign the whole fault is near major failure and literally locked itself into a tight grip after the initial 5 quake.
