100 knot typhoon approaching Tokyo |
Typhoons hit the Japanese main islands frequently in a bad year, but the forecast track of this one (link) is bad for Tokyo. Right now it is 100 knots which is equal to a low-end Cat 3 major hurricane; it is forecast to decrease to 85 knots in 12 hours but it will be inland then, so not clear whether it will come ashore at 100 knots (trivia: a knot is 1 nautical mile/hour, and 1 nautical mile is 1 minute of latitude). If it goes right down forecast path, wind will be blowing into Tokyo Bay so they could have some interesting storm surges. Not a good year for Honshu.
