The Spectacles Effect |
Just a little reminder: there's a scene in Monty Python where two women are reading their horoscopes. 1st woman: It says here, "You are a huge scaly monster with fifteen horns, a great yellow belly, twelve legs and spectacles". 2nd woman: Ooooh! It's right about the spectacles! You see this attitude a lot in earthquake prediction circles - focus on one thing that's right and ignore the things that are wrong. All sorts of justifications are advanced for this. But ultimately you have to confront the possibility or probability that the prediction, like the horoscope, is completely without value.
