Critical mass for what? Again I have no expertise, but I don't think it could cause an explosion like an atomic bomb. Somewhere I heard that bomb design uses conventional explosives to focus the energy inwards to start the nuclear explosion...or something like that.

Maybe not a good idea to have this particular kind of speculation on this page, given that you are retired USGS (and I am an active research scientist). Interesting, but depressing.
