WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The 2011 Atlantic hurricane season will produce 6 to 10 hurricanes, the government's weather agency predicted on Thursday.

In its first forecast for the storm season that begins on June 1, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecast 12 to 18 named storms, with 6 to 10 developing into hurricanes.

Three to six of those could be major Category 3 or above hurricanes, with winds of more than 110 miles per hour (177 km per hour), the agency said.
