Brian answered comprehensively on small plates. Not sure what you (Beth) mean by weird quakes but these may be from the spreading centers between the Pacific Plate and Nazca and Cocos plates. This Spreading Center is called the East Pacific Rise. Theer is another spreading center that splits off of it and runs east through the Galapogos Islands....or at least on that general area.
