I don't think I explained very well then as I think you missed the point.

Those players excelled BECAUSE of their quirky unorthodox playing. There are no players like them anymore (except the dope addicts) because players are not allowed to use quirky or unorthodox techniques. They are 'encouraged' to conform. Overall players are better than they used to be because of the training, but since the unusual is discouraged we don't find better.

Society does not tolerate difference very well. And I'll be blunt, I don't tolerate society very well.
