Earthquake Information Project - Posted by EQF February 19, 2011

It is likely that the Earthquake Precursor Project effort discussed earlier on this bulletin board is going to be expanded to become an effort to develop one or more Web pages and bulletin boards that will cover a wide range of topics related to earthquakes.

Those topics would include information regarding:

--- How and why earthquakes occur

--- Steps to take in order to prepare for one should you live near an earthquake fault zone

--- Information regarding earthquake forecasting programs

--- Discussions of earthquake precursors that the general public could watch for

--- Discussions of earthquake precursors that government agencies and disaster mitigation groups could watch for

--- What people should do while an earthquake is occurring in their area

--- What people should do after one has occurred in their area

--- How people can contact aid agencies to get help after an earthquake has occurred

--- How people can contact aid agencies to offer help after an earthquake has occurred

A major problem with many existing Web sites and bulletin boards that cover those topics is that they often have some “Special Interest Group” slant to them. For example, they might assume or insist that earthquakes cannot be predicted. And that can limit their effectiveness.

These Web sites and bulletin boards will attempt to present information that has a positive tone to it stating that this or that, such as predicting earthquakes, is actually possible. Or, it should at least be attempted.

There are already a number of Web sites where helpful information is available regarding a number of those previously listed topics. These new Web sites and bulletin boards will usually try to point to them for references rather than attempt to “reinvent the wheel.”

One of my Web sites is already organized for developing this type of effort. The next steps in this process will be to discuss it with various parties and get the new Research Bulletin Board being developed at my Web site fully operational. This post is one part of that discussion effort.

It is expected to take a while to get this effort organized as there are some other projects that have an equal or higher priority.

These are personal opinions.
