UPDATE FOR THE EARTHQUAKE PRECURSOR PROJECT February 16, 2011

This Earthquake Precursor Project is presently in a temporary “hold” state waiting for one or two other important earthquake forecasting and research projects to be completed.

BULLETIN BOARD PROJECT

The first of those projects is the development of an Internet Bulletin Board where researchers will be invited to discuss Earthquake Precursors and also the structure of the bulletin board itself. For example, what additional helpful posting features might be added?

That bulletin board will not replace either of the EarthWaves boards (the other one is on Yahoo). The new board will be geared more for research reports than conversations.

There is a powerful new feature for it already installed at my Web site. That feature will (hopefully) make it possible for people to post entire research reports with pictures, charts, and html links etc. to the bulletin board. Canie and other people running bulletin boards can have the technology for free for their own use if they wish. They just need to contact me about it.

To post entire research reports people will first have to save their original research report as a .mht file. Then they will need to attach the .mht file to an E-mail and send it to a special E-Mail address at the Web site along with an included security code.

When the E-mail arrives at the Web site a program at the site will check for the security code. If it is present in the E-mail the program will then extract the .mht file from the E-mail and store the .mht file in a special directory. Then it will arrange things so that the .mht file is automatically displayed on the bulletin board as if it were a separate post such as this one.

As I said, that E-mail attached file feature is already operational at one of my Web sites. An experienced computer programmer and Web site developer created it for me some time ago. And it just needs to be linked to the new bulletin board as soon as the board is ready to go.

GOVERNMENT EARTHQUAKE FORECATING EFFORTS

The second project involves efforts that are presently underway to get governments around the world to become more actively involved with earthquake forecasting and research efforts.

In my opinion, the problem that is by far the worst for slowing foreward progress with the science of earthquake forecasting is the fact that this science is totally controlled by government and international scientific community politics.

One consequence of that is that it can be difficult or impossible to even post notes to any existing earthquake research bulletin boards or Internet Newsgroups that I myself know about without having someone else post a note that interferes in some way with the effort. That previously mentioned bulletin board that is in the development stage should largely take care of that particular problem.

However, the basic politics problem will still be there. And this separate effort that is being made to get governments moving regarding the science of earthquake forecasting will hopefully largely eliminate or at least reduce the severity of that major politics problem that has been around for decades or longer.
