Over the years there have been credible accounts from people who are strongly earthquake sensitive stating that they sometimes get hit with short periods of overwhelming sleepiness during the days before an earthquake. It is regarded as one of the manifestations of strong earthquake sensitivity and is sometimes referred to as the “sleepies.” In relatively little time they are wide awake again. There is none of the drowsiness that people frequently have when they wake up in the morning. Another somewhat similar manifestation at times referred to as a “panic attack” involves a perhaps twenty second sensation of a feeling of absolute panic or depression. And when over all of the sensations again disappear in the twinkling of an eye. In a few minutes the person might not even remembered that anything ever happened. Present theories are that these effects can result from various types of earthquake fault zone activity electromagnetic energy field fluctuations that can activate the sleep centers etc. in the brain. I personally feel that the sleep related effect might provide us with a very safe form of anaesthetic for use in surgery and even perhaps for people suffering from insomnia. And a number of years ago I sent a formal report to the U.S. Surgeon-General discussing this general subject matter and recommending that the medical community do some research on it. The relatively new medical practice of TMS (Trans Cranial Stimulation) might be somewhat related.
