Six days before a massive earthquake killed nearly 70,000 in China’s Sichuan province, physicist Menas Kafatos and his team saw warning signs on their computer screens.

“It’s the usual dilemma we face when we see a strong signature in advance,” said Kafatos, now founding dean of the Schmid College of Science at Chapman University. “What do you do? The point is that we’re still trying to learn the science.”

Kafatos’s research might sound like science fiction: using satellite data to forecast earthquakes.
