Re: Computer Information For Serious Researchers November 5, 2010 |
EQF, I have antivirus; it is free through one of the universities that I work at. I go to websites that I need to go to. I have little interest in going to yours; I have no reason to think that I will learn anything that will be of use to me and what I do (I have been reading many of your posts lately on Earthwaves). One thing that has happened: when I receive email from a Turkish student or professor, it is often followed by Turkish SPAM. My personal (non work) email address just started getting a flood of marketing email for no reason. You visit web sites, you are taking a chance. You take your work laptop to an internet cafe in Turkey, you are taking a big chance. I can and do log in to university libraries and download publications on what I am working on. I can get almost any journal. But, I have not been reading enough published papers. It is this where I should spend my time, and then writing my own manuscripts (which I am doing now). Posting on Earthwaves, going to nhc.noaa.gov, or nws.noaa.gov, and checking global quakes on the USGS site...that is a hobby...and that is enough. My daughter would "friend" me on facebook but I don't even want to join facebook (I prefer to Skype with her...in Santiago Chile for semester abroad). Sitting in front of the computer almost killed me in 2000 (blood clot in leg), so when I don't have to be in front of it, better to go for a walk/bike ride.
