Mammoth Lakes Area Quakes

Hi All. Here is a brief summary of the recent events in the Mammoth Area. On 05/17/2001 there was a slight increase in dilational strain indicated at the Motocross data. The data however did not give me any ideas as to where the quake or quakes might occur. I was fairly certain they would not be inside the caldera as there were no changes in the tilt data.

This recent swarm is believed to be associated with the Hilton Creek fault. There is also a known pool of magma below this area. The quakes however are tectonic which indicates that there was no movement of the magma itself. The location of the latest swarm is also very near the location of past swarms, which at that time they were believed to be tectonic.

Long Valley Caldera is located in the Walker Lane Belt, which in turn is located in the ECSZ. The most recent quake east of Lee Vining is in the Walker Lane Belt as well as Markleeville. From all indications the most recent quake near Lee Vining was tectonic.

In the past there have been some long period quakes (movement of magma), but were not at the frequency of occurrence to cause any concern (my opinion) and were located inside the caldera beneath the resurgent dome.

I will have to say that all an all this has been a good learning experience for Petra and I as we used three different data sources. I will have to admit thought that the swarm of quakes was not expected. Can't win them all. Take Care…Don in creepy town.
