Years ago (late Miocene, I think!) I had cause to study a lot of the data for offshore California from various surveys. The "turbidites" were apparent in many of them--landslides of considerable size. They leave a distinctive appearance on land in many of the California coastal formations, and there is no reason to think that this process has ended.
