One detail: the 1857 quake was not as big as 8.5 (presumably moment magnitude)...unless I am missing something. It was more like 8.0. It's hard to get a strike-slip earthquake much larger than M8 because the width of the locked part of a steep or vertical fault is not nearly as much as is the case for the locked part of a gently-dipping subduction zone.
