I've seen a couple of good ones from UCSB...but they are rare. I saw some paper on fire on the Channel Islands and it said (I think) that there is no lightning on the islands, so can't get fire that way. I wonder then where that thunder came from when I was out on foot doing fieldwork on Santa Rosa Island.

My hypothesis is: if it happened, it must be possible.
