Interesting article. I have one of those front windshield cracks. Its propagation is maybe a cm a week.

HW published a paper on propagation of a spreading center segment on the East Pacific Rise: that rate was very high: a couple of meters a year. (That is propagation rate, not spreading rate).

As for John's comment, I read "within" and "for" the same way.
