Actually, it turned out pretty well.

I went to the CSU surplus equipment store in Ft. Collins and found a Gateway E6100 for $55. It had no HD or DVD but that didn't matter because I had them in the old machine. This thing is a huge tower and by using the memory from my old machine I was able to get 2Gb running. The CPU is a 3.4GHz Intel so I'm back in business and ahead of the game.

When I got online XP wanted to activate. Normally no problem but this time it refused, saying I had exceeded the limit. There was a number to call where a friendly robot asked some questions and then gave me an 80 digit number to activate XP again. I thought for sure they'd want $85 or so but no, no charge.
