M7.7 Sumatra |
I missed this quake on the USGS page with all the 100s of Baja/SOCAL aftershocks. I saw it as a news item. It is interesting because the focal mechanism is consistent with a subduction thrust event, and as the link states, this is the same part of the same subduction zone that broke in March 2005 (could be a different splay??). This bears on how much of the stress and accumulated strain is released by an earthquake. I still don't believe that the same part of the same Baja fault (Laguna Salada) would be capable of producing another M7 any time soon, but these are very diffferent fault systems and I could be wrong.
