link to Haiti expedition

The link is new and does a good job at describing our Rapid Response expendition. The area we surveyed where they might put new port etc facilities is St. Marc. The Haitians who participated in the cruise thought that any large move away from Port-au-Prince was an American/foreigh idea and the Haitians did not want it. Existing deep penetration industry seismic reflection data show that St Marc Bay and Peninsula are above a blind thrust fault. St Marc Peninsula shows a beautiful set of uplifted and folded marine terraces, with the younger ones dated by Mann et al 1995. Our data were inconclusive about whether or not there were submerged, or submerged and subsided, low stand terraces. But, the industry data show little reflective mounds on the crests of 2 anticlines that are now at 500 m and 1200 m depth. If a ROV later shows these to be shallow water corals, then there has been large subsidence of the flanks of the main uplifting anticline. If shallow water and dateable, then there is a long-term rate of subsidence. If the flanks of the anticline are subsiding and the crest is uplifting, the structural relief (and blind thrust slip) are higher than would be determined from uplift rates alone.

I've finally been able to get work on Haiti set aside for now so I can focus on work offshore Southern California.
