partly O/T: 2 earth scientists go for a walk

This is a true story. Two Sundays ago HW and I went for a walk in the local nature area. Flocks of Canada geese were flying over (saying "eh" and doing snot rockets I suppose). HW said out loud something like "I wonder if geese can cr*p while flying" Within about 30 seconds, about 3 seconds after the last goose flew over, she received the answer to her question as a deposit on her shoulder. Being scientists, we then talked about whether we could determine the altitude of the goose from the acceleration of gravity, the terminal velocity of goose cr*p, and the time delay (fortunately, we are not so far gone as to actually do the calculation or get a wind tunnel to calculate the terminal velocity).

We did the same hike 2 days ago. HW, being a scientist, determined that she should wear HD's jacket, which she did. We did not receive another example to prove that geese can do this more than once in flight.

I received more than 30 Haiti-related emails yesterday. Lots of interesting stuff going on in the science, but most of these are related to planning and logistics.
