Could use some help here |
I just called Leonardo "Nano" Seeber at Lamont and asked him how useful it would be to use the GeoEye satellite imagery to come up with evidence for or against ground rupture. He said it would be useful. You can go to the publications I linked to yesterday and find a map of the fault and look in that area, or email me at chris@quake.crustal.ucsb.edu and I'll email you a figure from a paper (although this is not very detailed). A careful look at N-S streets could rule out large lateral displacements. My quick look so far makes it look like large areas near the fault have little evidence for collapse of buildings. So, maybe the truly devasted areas are limited in extent and the high-end fatalities that have been broadcast are overestimated guesses, although by now there seems to be some basis for 50,000 + fatalities. I will work with the seismic reflection data today.
