Starting a new thread because the previous thread is mixed up with nonsense in part, IMHO. This is, as anyone watching the news knows, serious. If you want to help, give money. I am not much interested in looking at destruction but watched the NBC national news followed by 15 minutes of CNN. I've been in a creative rut and I'm just trying to get some inspiration that understanding active faults is important. The Haiti catastrophe was entirely predicable, although when it was to happen was not. I'm not going to give money directly. Instead, I'm going to continue to not write proposals until at least May, so that I can try and get my work published. I'll be paid half time this year and then less when the funding runs out. As I said in a previous post, I'm thinking about studying the San Gregorio fault offshore Central California. I also need to publish on the North Anatolia fault, where many geologists and geophysicists think west Istanbul is a catastrophe in waiting. I need to publish on Palos Verdes. the news appropriately focussed exclusively on the humanitarian crisis. The geology/seismotectonics will be interesting and let's post this here. Chris
