Cathryn, HD would defintely like writing as a profession. But, she would have to be the 1% (??guessing) of those who try who make their living at it. For a class this past weekend she was trying to write in scientific style and was freaking out over it; so far she does not like scientific writing. But, she is an undergrad and most, probably all, of the grad students I have worked with need a lot of help to write scientific stuff in the early stages of their studies.
