Yes the 1872 quake was one of the most historical quakes in California. You mentioned Yosemite, that is where famed naturalist John Muir was camping when the quake hit. He describes in his memoirs the tremendous loud roar coming from the ground combined with the defeaning noise of boulders that came crashing down the cliffs by Yosemite falls. They suspect this quake measured in the 8 range and had many aftershocks in the 6 range.

Fast forward to 92 when the Landers quake hit, scientist were able to draw a linear line that extended from Landers into Lone Pine. Hector Mine hit, it roughly fell in this same path. It has since been surmised that this stretch of faults MAYBE as strong, if not stronger and as important as the San Andreas fault. I.e. not a "branch" of the system that every other fault in CA is considered but a trunk in itself. It has been named the Walker Lane Belt. THey further realized this stretch extends south of the boarder and between this fault system and San Andreas, that is what is pulling the Gulf of California up north so much every year. Millions of years from now, the Gulf of CA will extend up into where Sacramento is today.
