This is a pretty good article; the author knows what he is atlking about. The half frozen snakes were mentioned in a BSSA publiched paper I read 2 decades ago. On the other hand, the animals reacting a few seconds before the Tanshan (sp?) earthquake in 1976 is probably them just detecting the P wave before the more damaging S wave and surface waves arrived.
