I remember hearing once that some in the scientific community have questioned if the San Andreas even exists in the Salton Sea area as a solid trace as it does in the rest of CA. The theory was that the area was a bunch of random smaller faults, which this article now suggests. IF true I also remember hearing if there was even a major quake potential in this area. As it is now they think it goes every 300 miles, but, I don't think there is any trenching out there to really confirm or deny this. Starting in Palm Springs and going south this is the one part of the fault they don't know what the deal is.
