CNN is still using China's magnitude estimate (6.0) rather than the likely more accurate USGS estimate (5.7)in their headlines.

I'm simply astounded that such a moderate quake has destroyed more than 18000 "homes". Jeez - what a difference good building codes and wealth for good construction make!! I realize that there are additional factors, including proximity of the quake to a highly populated area, definition of "home" and soil/ground conditions (and basin reflection, rupture direction, etc.), but I'm sure those are the two most important.

The MUCH larger 2003 M6.5 San Simeon quake destroyed one building.
