Re: Slow Earthquake in Washington State???? |
Hi Lowell & Canie, A friend mentioned this story to me, but I didn't have any way to find the information to read it directly. As you know I live about 3 to 4 miles from the Rodgers Creek Fault and I have noticed a remarkable change in the movement of my house over the last year, but in particular, the past six months. I have a fairly good idea of timing,in that I painted my livingroom a year ago. It has a vaulted ceiling and on the walls coming down the longest distance there are cracks at the seams. Normally that's to be expected, however, not so much in a single year or a few months. Now I'm seeing little fissures off of the main cracks, which to is unusual. My neighbor next door has a two story home and all of the homes in this neighborhood have slab floors. He unfortunately had uplift in his livingroom. He's a contractor, so he can fix it himself, but I think it paints a very clear picture that the ground is moving here a little more than normal. The soil here is a mixture of clay and allevial soils, which also adds to the problem. We did not have to much or to little rain the past two rainy seasons, so I don't think that's the source of the problem. Yes, slow earthquakes are interesting and if we had some decent monitoring here, I might know if that very thing is what is happening under my house. Thanks Lowell for sharing that quite fascinating story.
