Yes he did explain. It mostly had to do with not wanting to wash out other elements being projected, such as the stars from the planetarium projector.

I found it interesting not only for the quality of the imagery, but my interest in laser technology was piqued as well.

BTW, they were also able to accurately simulate the LA orangish skyglow.
