stronger rocks in subduction zones |
The reference to rocks stronger at depth in subduction zones than in California refers to the faults slipping aseismically below 10-20km depths in California, compared to the colder rocks in subduction zones harboring earthquakes to greater depths. In addition, the shallowly-dipping subduction faults allow much wider ruptures than does the vertical strike-slip faults in California.
