Programming Language Update April 15, 2009

An effort is underway to find a free download programming language that researchers around the world can use for sharing source code related to a number of projects. Several versions of Fortran were evaluated and eliminated. At the moment the top contender is a language called FreeBasic. Perl is just too complicated for probably most people including me.

Gnuplot might be used for graphics as it can be used with any programming language that can link with it. And it would be nice if people using different languages could share the same basic graphics generation routines.

EARTHQUAKE FORECASTING - On another topic

Rapid progress is being made with understanding the nature of the EM Signals that are being used with the freeware downloadable earthquake forecasting computer program. The latest advance indicates that volcanic activity could in fact be quite important to the generation of the signals. The signals are undoubtedly earthquake fault zone activity related. But the original source for the signal energy might be volcanoes in addition to solar flares, hurricanes, and powerful earthquakes.

Strong signals detected on April 13, 2009 look very much like they may have been linked with volcanic activity that got started a day or two earlier in the Galapagos Islands. Before that, signals detected in late March looked like they were linked with the Redoubt volcano in Alaska.

This new information is believed to be shedding light on why the signals are being generated at specific times rather than continuously.
